RUM TASTING

What better drink to have in a gorgeous modern pirate mansion than rum? Learn the history behind cultivating the region’s famous liquor from sugar cane, and each sip will feel like a step into the Caribbean culture. Dive into the heroic tales of the New World, its links to the transatlantic slave trade and the refinement process leading to some of the finest spirits in the world. This masterclass is run by the most dedicated proponents of rum in the region and taught under the seal of our French maître hotel—an ideal experience to share with friends and family. Explore the unique flavours of the three main types of marketed rum: White, Gold and Vintage. Aged or dark rum distinguishes itself by the intensity of taste and strong sweet aroma. Its production process is very similar to that of the original recipe of fermented molasses or sugar cane before distillation. The difference mainly comes from improved control or process and increased production. The golden rum takes on the sultry notes of added caramel with a gorgeous amber colour.

The Cuban Mojito is one of the most famous Caribbean exports worldwide, and for a good reason. Delicious, refreshing, and reliant on top-quality ingredients, the cocktail also has a special place in history with the famous pirate Sir Richard Drake, who resided on our property in 1586. The legend goes that on his way to Cartagena, Sir Drake’s cousin crafted the mythical drink to calm nerves and frustrations in the voyage. This drink eventually became the Mojito, a perfect marriage of sugar cane, mint and legend. Our bartender will teach the masterclass, bringing you the incredible skills learned and certified by the best mixologist in the country and creator of our bar, Camila Pérez.
